Why Classic Radar Fails to Detect FPV Drones

The drone's body gives the main speed, but each spinning blade adds its own shift. The tip of the blade moves toward the radar at 150 m/s, then away. This creates extra frequencies around the main signal-a unique pattern called the micro-Doppler signature.
A bird flaps its wings slowly and smoothly. Drone rotors produce high-frequency harmonics and sharp "blade flashes."
On a visual graph (spectrogram), a neural network sees this difference instantly.
Of course, there are physical limits. You need a few seconds of clear signal to build the graph, and the signal-to-noise ratio is still physics.
That is why the answer is not one magic sensor. It is a system architecture. Use a distributed network of small radars, smart tracking algorithms and deep sensor fusion.
The radar hears the "voice" of the rotors, the thermal camera confirms the heat, and the radio sensor checks the control link.
The FPV drone is not invisible. It just falls below the assumptions of 20th-century radar. But it cannot hide from modern sensor fusion.
Classic radar was built for fighter jets: large radar signatures, high altitudes, and predictable paths. An FPV drone breaks all three rules at once.
1. Size.
A jet reflects square meters of signal. An FPV reflects a tiny fraction-about the same as a small bird. The return signal sits near the noise floor, making it almost impossible for a classic tracker to build a stable track.
2. Doppler Effect.
To ignore the ground, radars filter out slow-moving objects. But an FPV flying across the radar beam has almost zero speed toward the radar. To the filter, it looks exactly like a tree swaying in the wind.
3. Altitude.
Flying at 25-50 meters means hiding behind terrain, hills and buildings. Physical shadows hide the target better than any expensive stealth technology.
But here is the engineering paradox: the same physics that makes the drone hard to see also gives it away. The propellers sing.
The radar return is not just one speed.
