Last year, our
SpearX.EU team faced a problem many engineers know too well:
we needed to quickly calculate optical systems for UAVs across different visual spectrums (RGB, SWIR, MWIR, LWIR) & understand exactly what the camera will capture at specific flight parameters.

We searched for available tools. The result? We found nothing suitable.

No existing calculator allowed us to:

🔹 Consider IR spectrum specifics
🔹 See diffraction impact on quality immediately
🔹 Check motion blur for different flight scenarios
🔹 Understand what the camera will actually see at given altitude and distance

So we decided to build our own solution.
It started as a quick internal script, but turned into something much more valuable.
Today I'm proud to share UAV Camera Calculator - a tool from our internal SpearX toolkit, now available to the community completely FREE of charge.

One weekend of work. Weeks of time saved.

What the Calculator Does:

• RGB (visible light 0.4-0.7μm)
• SWIR (near-IR 0.9-1.7μm)
• MWIR (mid-IR 3.0-5.0μm)

• Field of View (FOV) and coverage area
• Ground Sample Distance (GSD) for ground imaging
• Pixel size at specified distance
• Diffraction analysis and optimal F# for each camera type
• Depth of field and hyperfocal distance

• Flight speed and camera angle consideration
• Perpendicular motion component calculation
• Maximum speed recommendations for sharp images
