UAV Navigation: What Works TODAY (not in 5 years)

Everyone talks about quantum sensors and celestial navigation.
But right now, at 3am, your drone is flying on these 7 methods.
Let's be honest about what actually works & where each one breaks.
1. GNSS (GPS/GLONASS/Galileo)
Global, cheap, 1-3 m accuracy standard. Up to 1-2 cm with RTK.
! Easy to jam or spoof. In contested environments, it's the first thing that goes.
! Never rely on GNSS alone. Always have a backup.
2. IMU (Inertial System)
Accelerometers + gyroscopes. 500-2000 Hz update rate.
The only sensor that keeps working when everything else fails.
! Drift grows fast 1-10 m/min on MEMS. Essential as base layer, not a solo solution.
3. Optical Flow
Downward camera tracks visual features between frames. Cheap, low power, excellent for position hold.
! Useless over water, snow, or any uniform surface. 2D only.
4. VIO (Visual-Inertial Odometry)
Camera + IMU fusion via EKF. Accuracy 0.5-2% of distance traveled.
The gold standard for autonomous flight DJI, Skydio, Autel all rely on it.
! Needs light and texture. Motion blur kills tracking.
5. LiDAR SLAM
2-10 cm accuracy. Builds 3D map in real time. Works in complete darkness.
! $500-5000, heavy, struggles in rain/fog/dust.
6. UWB (Ultra-Wideband)
5-30 cm accuracy indoors. Less than 10 ms latency. Underrated by most teams.
! Needs fixed anchor infrastructure. Limited to 50-150 m.
7. Sensor Fusion
EKF/UKF combines 5-10 sensors, dynamically weighting trust in real time.
The brain. No serious autonomous drone works without it.
! Hard to tune. The difference between a drone that lands & one that doesn't.
Recommended combinations:
Indoors → VIO + UWB + barometer → 5-15 cm
Urban → GNSS + VIO + barometer → 0.5-2 m
EW/Jamming → IMU + LiDAR + magnetometer → 1-5 m
Warehouse → UWB + Optical Flow → 10-30 cm
Open terrain → GNSS (RTK) + IMU + VIO → 1-5 cm
The uncomfortable truth:
Hardware is only 50% of success.
Cheap sensors + good fusion beat expensive sensors + bad software. Every time.
